Mariazell in the Vienna Woods - Stiftskeller, Revitalization
For the Mariazell Benedictine monastery in the Vienna Woods, the wine industry was an important branch of the economy . For this reason, a large cellar was built in 1753, which held over 200,000 liters of wine.

Learn about Our History

12th Century
The brothers Heinrich and Rapoto von Schwarzenburg founded the (Klein-) Mariazell monastery in the Vienna Woods around 1120. This subsequently developed into an engine of colonization and the spiritual and secular center in the upper Triestingtal.
13th Century
The Babenberg Duke Friedrich II promotes the monastery to the best of his ability. There were extensive expansions and extensions, which can still be seen today at the basilica and monastery in Klein-Mariazell, especially in the form of magnificent Romanesque portals.
15th Century
The late Gothic era dominates the region. The Mariazell monastery is being extensively rebuilt, and the churches in Kaumberg, Altenmarkt, St. Martin and St. Pankraz in Nöstach are being converted, which are still clearly visible today.
17th/18th Century
The baroque era leaves clear traces. A rich sacral landscape arises around the monastery: the pilgrimage churches in St. Corona, on Hafnerberg and in Thenneberg are built. In 1782 the monastery was closed and the region lost its center.
1995/2004
An extensive general restoration of the basilica in Klein-Mariazell is followed by the construction of a new monastery. The tradition of religious life is resumed after 222 years. The place becomes a spiritual center for the whole region again.
